Dental Reconstruction

If you lose a tooth, you may need a dental reconstruction to replace your missing tooth or teeth. A dental reconstruction refers to repairing damage to your teeth and replacing missing teeth to restore normal oral function. At our office, we commonly use dental implants for dental reconstruction. However, we can also replace lost teeth with dental crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are the most successful method of restoring a single missing tooth. In addition to offering the most natural look and feel, they are also the only treatment that replaces the root in addition to the visible portion of the tooth. As the implant heals, it fuses with the surrounding bone tissue in a process known as osseointegration. This stabilizes the dental implant so that it can provide the same level of biting and chewing force as a natural tooth. Implants are also the only method of tooth replacement that can preserve the health of the jawbone and prevent bone loss. In fact, implants are the only method of tooth replacement that actually helps stimulate bone growth. 

Dental implants are small titanium posts that act as replacement tooth roots when placed in the jaw. After they integrate with the jawbone, they can be used to support crowns, bridges, or dentures. These restorations look just like natural teeth and can restore full oral function.

The crown portion of the dental implant restoration is custom-crafted to match the size, shape, and color of the remaining teeth. Patients can enjoy the full benefits of their procedure with proper oral hygiene and regular dental checkups. During each visit, the dentist will monitor the health of the gums and bone surrounding the implant to ensure its stability. With proper care, a dental implant can last for a lifetime.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges can be used to replace one or more missing teeth in a row. A traditional bridge consists of a pontic (a false tooth) flanked by two dental crowns. The bridge spans the space where the teeth are missing, and the crowns anchor the bridge in place on either side of the gap. Traditional bridges are usually made from porcelain fused to metal or ceramics. These materials are highly stain-resistant and durable, making them ideal for long-lasting restorations. Ceramic and porcelain-fused-to-metal bridges can be matched to the color of the surrounding teeth and are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Dentures

Dentures are also an option for patients who have many missing teeth throughout the mouth. These are removable prosthetics held in place with suction or adhesive. Because these prosthetics rest on top of the gums, they do not offer the same stability as dental implants.
